This award recognises their outstanding work on the Wonder of Science program which trains and develops PhD student ambassadors to deliver impactful STEM education across Queensland schools, fostering a culture of scientific inquiry and exploration.
PhD candidates participating in the Wonder of Science program receive support, professional development opportunities, and platforms to share their experiences as they engage with rural and regional communities. The program involves PhD candidates visiting school students in Years 4-9 multiple times a year to participate in a term-long research challenge, mentor students, and participate in panels, workshops, presentations and community events.
Since its inception, over 400 PhD candidates have participated in the Wonder of Science program, engaging over 108,000 individuals across 61 schools. The program is a cross-university collaboration involving the University of Queensland and three partner universities, allowing PhD candidates to network with peers and professionals beyond their academic environments. The Wonder of Science program stands out as an exemplary initiative that positively impacts PhD candidates and the community, showcasing the importance of engaging graduate researchers in meaningful and impactful activities.
